Phillies Acquiring Jay Bruce, Gallo Injured and More

Lindsey Wasson-USA TODAY Sports

The Philadelphia Phillies are hoping to supplement their bench with some power and cement their lead atop the National League East. The Seattle Mariners, after a red-hot start, have faded badly and want to trade veterans for longer-term assets. That made the teams perfect trade partners, and it appears the Mariners have agreed to send outfielder/first baseman Jay Bruce to the Phillies for salary relief and a minor leaguer. Elsewhere, the Rangers might lose slugger Joey Gallo for an extended period, the Brewers won’t have their opening-day starter and the Twins just keep winning.

Bruce is hitting just .212, but he has 14 home runs, a total that would lead the Phillies.

Joey Gallo was enjoying by far his best season for the Rangers, so this is unfortunate timing for an injury that can linger.

Austin Riley continues his tear for the Braves. He now has eight homers in his first 16 career games, tying an MLB record.

Another contender, another injury, as the Brewers are placing Jhoulys Chacin on the IL. This one is strange — Chacin didn’t mention an injury after his last start.

While all this is going on around baseball, the Minnesota Twins. Just. Keep. Winning. They’ve taken two of the first three from the Rays in a showdown of surprise teams.
