Phillies News: Joe Girardi Named New Philadelphia Manager

Undeniably, Bryce Harper always wanted to play for the New York Yankees. Now, he’s going to play for the ex New York Yankees manager. On Thursday, the Philadelphia Phillies hired Joe Girardi to be their skipper.

While a formal announcement is expected later in the day on Thursday, several sources who cover the club have already ran with the story. Recently, the Philies fired Gabe Kapler after two seasons as the manager.

Notably, Girardi was not the only big name candidate the Phillies brought in during the interview process. The team reportedly also interviewed former major league managers Buck Showalter and Dusty Baker. When considering this, Girardi must have had an impressive interview with the Phillies’ brass.

Additionally, Girardi interviewed with the New York Mets, and the Chicago Cubs; who hired David Ross on Wednesday.

Equally important, the Phillies are built around superstar outfielder Bryce Harper. Now, think back to who was managing those winning Yankees teams when Harper was a young kid growing up. Indeed, it was Girardi. Finally, ask yourself if you think Harper could have been involved in swaying the final decision in Girardi’s favor?

Without question, there’s a pretty good chance.

The Phillies have seen their division rival Washington Nationals jump out to a 2-0 World Series lead over the heavily favored Houston Astros. Obviously they hope that Girardi’s experience and success will get them on the right track and on a similar path.

Girardi managed in the Bronx from 2008 to 2017, winning a World Series championship in 2009. He posted a 910-710 record during that time.
