Rams Trade Alec Ogletree to Giants

Jim Brown-USA TODAY Sports

Even with a week to go until the official league year begins, the Los Angeles Rams can’t stop making roster moves. Wednesday, the team announced they had traded middle linebacker Alec Ogletree and a seventh-round pick to the New York Giants in exchange for a 2018 fourth and a sixth-round pick.

The Rams just signed Ogletree to a four-year contract extension last season. He was due to count $10 million against the salary cap thisyear.

Ogletree had a solid season statistically in Wade Phillips’ defense in 2017, recording 95 tackles, two sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and one interception. He returned that pick for a touchdown. Apparently the team wasn’t satisfied in his run-game support.

It’s been a busy couple of weeks for the Rams. They traded picks for cornerback Marcus Peters from the Kansas City Chiefs, then turned around and sent defensive end/outside linebacker Robert Quinn to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for draft picks.

The Giants must really love what Ogletree is bringing to the table because all the big money he’ll cost him literally gets paid out next week. He’s due a $7 million roster  bonus when the league year begins and a $6 million roster bonus in 2019 that will be fully guaranteed.

Ogletree has reportedly been on the block for at least the last month. When working the deal with K.C. for Peters, Ogletree was part of that conversation, as was Quinn.

Just Tuesday, the Rams placed the franchise tag on free safety Lamarcus Joyner. They now have plenty of money to get his contract done, get an extension wrapped up for All-Universe defensive tackle Aaron Donald and possibly work out a deal with Sammy Watkins before he officially hits free agency.

Ogletree, like Quinn, was a former first round pick. Los Angeles (then St. Louis) drafted the former Georgia standout in the 2013 NFL Draft.

JERRY JONES COUGHS UP $2 MILLION

Jerry Jones did not have a good relationship with the NFL in 2017 and now it’s cost him some real cash. Wednesday the league announced that Jones will reimburse the NFL $2 million plus in legal fees as he battled Ezekiel Elliott’s suspension and tried to block a new deal for NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

According to an NFL spokesman, the situation has been “resolved to the satisfaction of all parties.”

After fighting his suspension for months, Elliott eventually sat out the six games mandated by Goodell. Jones’ attempt to thwart Goodell’s new contract also fell far short.
