Ranked Teams That Fell In Week 4 Of College Football Season

Missouri looked bad for a second straight week but this time it cost them.

There were some crazy happenings in Week 4 of the college football season, which includes the No. 3 TCU Horned Frogs who escaped being on this list by the smallest of hairs on their chinny chin chins. A fourth-down, game-ending, tipped ball catch saved them against Texas Tech and kept their ranking intact.

However, the following four ranked teams weren’t so lucky as they all suffered defeat:

Oregon Suffers Worst Home Loss Since 1977

No team fell harder in the rankings than the defending Pac-12 champions Oregon, which fell outside of the AP Top 25 for the first time since 2009. That ended a streak of 98 consecutive appearances in the Top 25. How can you really argue with it after their lopsided 62-20 home loss to Utah? The Ducks had no answer for the Utes attack and by the time it was all said and done, the 62 points they surrendered were the most they had ever allowed at Autzen Stadium. Oregon has two September losses for the first time since 2004, including their 31-28 defeat at Michigan State two weeks ago. They just haven’t really looked like the Oregon of old – even in their season-opening 61-42 win over Eastern Washington.

They will have an uphill climb trying to get back in to the Top 25 this season with a tough road ahead that includes games against Cal, Stanford, USC and Oregon State to close out the season.

Georgia Tech Get Dumped By Duke

The Yellow Jackets dropped to No. 20 in the country following a hard-fought 30-22 loss at Notre Dame but they simply ran out of gas this past weekend in a 34-20 loss at Duke. Duke essentially saw Notre Dame’s blueprint and followed it, gashing the Yellow Jackets on the ground. Senior running back Shaquille Powell averaged 6.3 yards per carry for 88 yards and three touchdowns for Duke while the Georgia Tech passing game was severely limited. Justin Thomas completed just six-of-21 passes for 143 yards and a touchdown with an interception. A second consecutive road game coming off the loss to Notre Dame was going to be a tough test and after falling out of the AP rankings, it won’t get any easier with North Carolina, Clemson, Pittsburgh and Florida State ahead.

BYU Blanked By Michigan

BYU was the talk of the college football world following back-to-back wins over Nebraska and Boise State, but they ran out of steam at Ann Arbour. As an independent, their schedule is stacked seemingly each week but they simply didn’t have it in Week 4. Freshman Tanner Mangum has struggled in consecutive games, including a 31-0 blowout loss at Michigan this past weekend in which he was 12-of-28 for just 55 yards. While they survived without injured quarterback Taysom Hill in the first two weeks, it’s been pretty clear how much they’ve missed him the last two.

The Cougars had no answer for the Wolverines offense and their own attack was bullied at times in their second road game in as many weeks. BYU isn’t as bad as it looked against Michigan but an injury to their starting quarterback combined with a very difficult schedule has them taking a major step back this week.

Missouri Stumped By Wildcats

The Tigers relinquished their hold on the final spot in the AP rankings following a 21-13 loss to Kentucky that undoubtedly caught some off guard. The Tigers continued to struggle on the offensive side of the football after barely surviving the week before with a 9-6 home win over Connecticut. Anybody that thought they would bounce back was clearly wrong, even though they did have a 10-7 lead at one point. However, they were outscored 14-3 the rest of the way. It won’t get any easier for Missouri with South Carolina in town this week followed by back-to-back games against Florida and Georgia, so the potential is there for things to get even uglier for them in the SEC.
