Lowry is included on Gregg Popovich’s prolonged list of the players who are in contention to play at the upcoming FIBA World Cup in China, but this surgery could derail that. However, Lowry is still hopeful he will play a part in the USA Basketball training camp in Las Vegas next month and is hoping that this setback will not impact his place on the team.
The 33-year-old injured his thumb during the Eastern Conference semifinals series with the Philadelphia 76ers. Although it is his non-shooting hand, the injury did hamper his offensive performances in that series and then in the NBA Finals against the Golden State Warriors.
“During the game, I can’t feel my thumb,” Lowry told ESPN’s The Jump during the Finals, “… the flicking of the passing, the kind of — the ball movement, handling the ball.”
In the Finals Lovery averaged 16.2 points, 7.2 assists, and 4.0 rebounds per game against the Golden State Warriors. He exploded in the championship-clinching Game 6 victory with a double-double of 26 points (9 of 16 from the floor) and 10 assists, along with seven boards and three steals. Although it seemed that the left thumb didn’t bother him in that game, Lowry still needed surgery to repair a torn tendon.
