As the NCAA Tournament comes to a close, GMS likes to review some of the power conference or power program teams that made it to the Big Dance and ask whether or not they’ve got a shot to return to the show next season. We kick things off with teams eliminated in the first round.
Recruit and Reload: Cincinnati Bearcats
Key Losses: Octavius Ellis Sr., Farad Cobb Sr.,
Key Returners: Troy Caupain (expected), Gary Clark
Key Newcomers: Jarron Cumberland, Nysier Brooks
Breakdown: Losing Ellis is a bit like losing one’s franchise player, but his departure does signal the beginning of something that many surrounding UC are very excited about. Clark made huge strides as a sophomore as the physical enforcer and finisher for Mike Cronin, continuing this program’s tradition in that department.
However, the biggest positive going into next year is the return of Caupain. It’s been a few years since UC had someone that could go out and get buckets like he can. Many are curious how Cumberland will fit in with the increased athleticism he’ll face defensively, but he’s a classic UC guard in the sense that he’s extremely physical. That consistent outside shot should help him see the floor as well.
