As the NCAA Tournament comes to a close, GMS likes to review some of the power conference or power program teams that made it to the Big Dance and ask whether or not they’ve got a shot to return to the show next season. We continue on with teams eliminated in the Sweet 16.
Recruit and Reload: Gonzaga Bulldogs
Key Losses: Kyle Wiltjer, Domantas Sabonis, Eric McClellan
Key Returners: Josh Perkins
Key Newcomers: Zach Norvell, Zach Collins, Killian Tillie, Rui Hachimura, Nigel Williams-Goss, Johnathan Williams
Breakdown: It isn’t that losing Sabonis was a complete surprise, but having him come right about and declare that he’d hire an agent before Mark Few and his staff really had a chance to lobby for the benefits of another year…that was a bit of a shock. Still, the Bulldogs are in good shape moving forward as they always seem to be under Few.
Having Perkins go into next season, his third year in the program, with the chance to be a bit more assertive could be a good thing. He’s got the ability to create shots for himself and others, but his consistency will be the key. If he can knock down shots from deep while still getting his teammates involved at the rate that he does, Gonzaga might not be as potentially dangerous as a year ago, but they might not be so frustrating to watch at times.
