As the NCAA Tournament comes to a close, GMS likes to review some of the power conference or power program teams that made it to the Big Dance and ask whether or not they’ve got a shot to return to the show next season. We kick things off with teams eliminated in the first round.
Recruit and Reload: Texas Longhorns
Key Losses: Isaiah Taylor (expected), Cameron Ridley Sr., Javan Felix Sr.
Key Returners: Kerwin Roach Jr., Eric Davis Jr.,
Key Newcomers: Jacob Young, Andrew Jones, James Banks
Breakdown: So much of Shaka Smart’s outlook next season depends on what Isaiah Taylor chooses to do. If he stays in the NBA Draft, Texas will have to lean on Roach Jr. and Davis Jr. to take over playmaking duties. If he returns, then UT might just have the best backcourt in the conference next year and could be in a position to challenge Kansas for the league crown.
Smart continues to bring in high school talent to Austin, with Jones and Young appearing to be the gems of his 2016 class. Any contributions from them should be indicative of just how good they could end up being.
