The best news in baseball Sunday, no matter which team you root for, came from former Red Sox star David Ortiz’s Instagram account.
Ortiz announced on the social media platform that he’s home from the hospital after he was shot June 9 in an apparent botched assassination attempt.
Recapping the nightmare
A group of men approached Ortiz, whose back was turned, in a nightclub on the night of June 9 in the Dominican Republic. One of them shot Big Papi in a terrifying episode caught on security video.
Medics rushed him to the hospital and flew him to Boston the next day. He required three operations before his wounds stabilized and he could begin recovery.
The men were arrested by Dominican authorities. They later determined they had been targeting a different David Ortiz in a drug cartel-related assassination attempt.

Back at home, safe and sound
Ortiz said in his Instagram post that he was thankful to be home and said his family celebrating his return.
He also said he couldn’t “crush food yet,” allowing that he still has recovering to do, though it surely is a good sign that he was able to travel.
The baseball world rallied around the beloved Red Sox star in the weeks after the incident, and it no doubt will continue to do so.
