Oh, 15 teams scored less than 75 points? But, what happened to all of those new rules that were supposed to open up the pace of the game and increase scoring, making college basketball more entertaining to the casual fan?
As usual, there are many reasons that things haven’t quite gone as planned and Whelan is here to provide his take. First, there’s the issue of officials placing an emphasis on new rules when the year starts but eventually reverting back to their old selves as the year goes on, letting more and more physical contact go uncalled. Second, there’s the issue of players still not being all that skilled, especially in a down cycle for the sport. Finally, Whelan says that it’s time to look at the fine men getting paid millions of dollars to draw up plays.
