The Seattle Mariners have gotten off to a good start in 2018, going 22-17 through their first 39 games as of Monday. However, they have suffered a serious blow as one of their leaders is out for a while. With Robinson Cano out, expect the Mariners to lose about five cents on the betting line from game-to-game, according to BetDSI.
Cano has played all 39 games for the Mariners this season, hitting .287 with four homers and 23 RBIs. At 35 years old, Cano is still playing high-level baseball for the Mariners, but he will go on the disabled list after he was hit by a pitch and has suffered a broken hand. Cano has a fracture of the fifth metacarpal on his right hand, specifically, and he’ll have another test on Tuesday. That test will give the Mariners more of an idea of how long he’ll be out for, and whether or not he’ll need to have surgery.
The estimates are that Cano will be out until late June, but those are being generous and it could be longer. That means the Mariners are going to have to find someone to replace him, and it looks like Andrew Romine is the best candidate to play second base. The 32-year-old is hitting just .185 with no homers and no RBIs this season, so he obviously isn’t going to replace Cano at the plate. Gordon Beckham or Taylor Motter could be called up from Triple-A Tacoma. Manager Scott Servais also said that center-fielder Dee Gordon won’t move back to second base, where he has won a Gold Glove. However, the longer that Cano is out, that move could be in the cards. Either way, this should be a blow to the Mariners’ odds to win the American League West or the pennant. Not only is Cano still a solid player, but he is a veteran and a leader in the clubhouse.
If you have Cano on your fantasy team, you could stash him for a few weeks until he is healthy. However, you’re probably not going to get someone that is close to Cano’s productivity, so you’ll have to look for other players/positions to pick up the slack for the second baseman.
