Roy Jones Jr Wins Again

Former world champion Roy Jones Jr defeated trial horse Willie Williams by knock out in Round 2 at a match last night in Cabarrus, North Carolina.

Jones is now 46 years old, and he continues to pursue a world championship in a fifth weight class.  He has owned major world championships at middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight, but he skipped the cruiserweight division, and that is what has been on his mind as he tries to close out his career with a win.

With all due respect to Williams, it was evident that the difference in Jones, who was once the best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet, and Williams was massive.  Not only was Williams not ever prepared to fight a guy like Jones, he was 2-6-1 in his last nine outings, and he broke that up by taking 2011 and 2012 off.  This match was nothing but a chance for Jones to log some ring time, because the match cannot be considered to elevate his ranking at all.

The cruiserweight champion on Roy Jones’ mind right now appears to be Marco Huck of Germany.  Huck has the WBO World title for roughly the last five years, and Jones it is not clear of Jones is after an actual payday or if he really thinks he can beat Huck, whose record is 38-2-1 and is 16 years younger than Jones.

Now, Jones last outing in September 0f 2014 was a first round KO in Russia over overmatched Egyptian Hany Atiyo, and prior to that he stopped Courtney Fry in the fifth round of a bout in Latvia, so Jones has really dropped off his level of competition as he looks for the type of ending he was famous for more than a decade ago.

Regardless, Jones will continue to throw his name out there as a cruiserweight contender, and someone is going to listen at some point.  Huck, as stated, is in his prime and he has been talking about moving up for another campaign at heavyweight.  Should he move up and vacate the title, Jones would almost certainly be in the running to fill one of the spots.
