Before Saturday’s beatdown of Miami, with North Carolin winning 96-71, Doug Gottlieb made comments on CBS about the future of the Tar Heels’ head coach, stating that a Roy Williams retirement could be coming after the year…if the Heels win it all.
There was no “report” on Roy. Simply stating his knees, vertigo,NCAA stuff make people think this could be his last year #UNC

and yes, people in basketball think Roy might walk if they win the whole thing….this is not news to anyone in hoops

At the end of the game, Williams took exception to Gottlieb’s quotes–though, it’s not clear whether or not present reporters accurately conveyed Gottlieb’s remarks to Williams or if they brought them up at all–calling them completely false.
Roy rips Doug Gottlieb for saying before the game that Roy was retiring and that Hurbert Davis was taking over. (Something I missed.)

Roy to Gottlieb: “you have no freakin idea what you’re talking about. The guy who said that couldn’t put his damn pants on the right way …

Of course, there has long been talk about when Williams would call it a career. With UNC’s recent downturn, a Roy Williams retirement seemed imminent, despite Williams not making any public comments to suggest so. On February 10, Williams had to be taken back to the locker room after collapsing during a timeout in a game against Boston College, yet another episode of his battle with vertigo.
Williams has won two national championships in his 12-plus seasons in Chapel Hill.
