Saints News: Drew Brees Expected to Start Against the Cardinals

The New Orleans Saints will be getting Drew Brees back on Sunday, ESPN’s Diana Russini and Ed Werder first reported.

Brees suffered a thumb injury in Week 2 against the Los Angeles Rams when he hit his hand hit Aaron Donald’s helmet. The injury was severe enough that the 40-year-old quarterback had to undergo surgery.

While the original timeframe for his full recovery wasn’t until December, the Saints expressed hope he would return this week. Brees told reporters on Wednesday that the plan was for him to start against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

Although the Saints missed the presence of their veteran leader, they went 5-0 during his absence behind Teddy Bridgewater’s strong play. Bridgewater piled up 1,370 yards and completed 68% of his passes with nine touchdowns and just two interceptions.

New Orleans is now in prime position to take control of the NFC as they sit at 6-1. The excitement about the return of their prolific signal caller can be summed up in the press release the team put out on Saturday which only contained two words: “I’m back.”
