San Diego State Aztecs – IPFW Mastodons Preview – 03.15.2016

The No.7-seeded IPFW Mastodons take on the No.2-seeded San Diego State Aztecs in the first round of the NIT tournament at Viejas Arena at Aztec Bowl. The game gets underway at 10:00 pm ET on Tuesday, Mar. 15 and will air on ES3.

The Aztecs are expecting a better outcome after their 68-63 loss to Fresno State in the 4 of the Mountain West tournament. Winston Shepard was the best player for the Aztecs, recording 15 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. The Mastodons, meanwhile, are coming off a close 69-68 loss at the hands of North Dakota State in the 2 of the Summit League tournament. John Konchar played well for IPFW, accounting for 17 points, seven steals, and four rebounds.

Konchar has upped his play over the last five games for the Mastodons, averaging 16.2 points, 10.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 3.2 steals, and 1.0 three-pointer.

The battle on the backboards could prove decisive, pitting strength against strength. San Diego State is among the nation’s elite on the offensive glass, ranking 30th in OR% at 33.8%. Meanwhile, IPFW ranks 25th in the nation at corralling defensive rebounds with a DR% of 74.0%. Also, the Mastodons’s 24th-ranked offense (offensive efficiency of 114.2) will face off against the fourth-ranked defense of the Aztecs (defensive efficiency of 91.5).

The Aztecs enter the game with records of 25-9 Straight Up (SU) and 14-13-3 Against The Spread (ATS).

In the other locker room, the Mastodons head into the game with records of 21-7 ATS and 24-9 SU.

This game will be the first meeting for San Diego State and IPFW in recent seasons.
