San Jose State Spartans vs. Oregon Ducks Betting Preview

San Jose State is a heavy road dog here and is currently receiving 41 points from bookmakers. There might be some decent live betting scenarios for the matchup, and the over/under for this matchup hasn’t been determined yet.

The line for this contest initially opened at -39.

The Spartans are 0-2 against the spread (ATS) and have lost 1.6 units so far in 2018. The team has recorded an O/U mark of 0-1. The Ducks have gained 0.0 units this season. The team is 1-1 ATS and has an O/U record of 1-1.

The Spartans have gone just 0-2 straight up (SU) in 2018 while the Ducks are 2-0 SU.

The Spartans are still looking for win No. 1 after a 31-0 shutout to Washington State last week. The Spartans defense allowed the Cougars to pass for 420 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 124 yards. Offensively, Montel Aaron completed just 13 passes on 25 attempts for 94 yards. Malike Roberson (33 yards on 12 rush attempts) led the ground attack. Josh Oliver (five receptions, 51 yards) and Bailey Gaither (two catches, three yards) handled the receiving duties in the defeat.

Oregon just put together a 62-14 win over Portland State. Justin Herbert completed 20-of-26 passes for 250 yards and four touchdowns. Tony Brooks-James (107 yards on 21 rush attempts, two TDs) and CJ Verdell (106 yards on 11 carries, one TD) mounted the running game as Brenden Schooler (four receptions, 30 yards) and Kano Dillon (three catches, 41 yards, one TD) led the pass-catching corps in the win.

San Jose State has run the ball on 43.3 percent of its offensive possessions this year while Oregon has an overall rush percentage of 61.8 percent. The Spartans have produced 75 rush yards/game and have two touchdowns on the ground this year. The Ducks are putting up 254 rushing yards per game and have seven total rush TDs.

If the results so far this season are any indication, then it appears the Ducks may hold an edge when it comes to RB effectiveness. Their running backs has produced 5.7 yards per carry while their defense is allowing 2.2 YPC to opponents. The Spartans have rushed for 2.5 yards per carry while allowing a YPC of 4.1 to opponents.

The Spartans offense has averaged 233 yards in the air overall and has three passing scores so far. The Ducks have recorded 279 pass yards per contest and have nine total pass TDs.

San Jose State has allowed opponents to rush for an average of 134 yards and pass for 433 yards per game. The Oregon defense has allowed 205.5 yards per game to opposing passers and 101.0 yards per game on the ground. The Ducks are allowing an adjusted net yards per pass attempt (ANY/A) of just 6.02 to opponents, while the Spartans have given up a 6.98 ANY/A.

Offensively, Aaron is up to 94 passing yards this year. He’s connected on 52 percent of his 25 attempts with zero scores through the air and has yet to throw an interception. He’s got a 1.90 adjusted net yards per pass attempt overall, although that number sits at 6.80 over the last two games.

Look for a balanced attack offensively from San Jose State in this one. Bailey Gaither, Josh Oliver and Tyler Nevens have combined for 403 total yards and four touchdowns over the last couple of outings.

In the other locker room, Justin Herbert has completed 20-of-26 passes for 250 yards, four TDs and zero INTs. Herbert’s ANY/A stands at 11.93 for the year and 12.39 over his past two games.

We’re thinking the Ducks will control the game’s pace by putting the ball into the hands of their running backs. Jaylon Redd (36 receiving yards, one TD this season) has chipped in lately, but Tony Brooks-James (107 rush yards, two rush TDs, nine receiving yards) and CJ Verdell (106 rush yards, one rush TD) have been significant factors in the Ducks’ recent offensive strategies.
