Seattle Mariners vs. Texas Rangers Betting Preview 08/07/18

The Seattle Mariners are paying a visit to Globe Life Park to do battle against their AL West nemesis Texas Rangers. The matchup gets underway at 8:05 p.m. ET and fans can catch the game on either RTNW or FSSW.

Seattle Mariners at Texas Rangers Odds

Texas (+100) is the home-team underdog against Seattle (-110) and Vegas has put the Over/Under for this one at 11.5 runs. Odds for wagering on the game’s total sit at +105 for the under and -125 for the over. Gamblers can also wager on the game’s spread with the runline odds standing at +135 for the Mariners -1.5 runs and -155 for the Rangers +1.5.

The Rangers are 49-64 straight up (SU) and 56-57 against the spread (ATS). The team hasn’t moved the needle much for gamblers, losing 2.4 units for moneyline bettors and 4.0 units (ATS). Texas has covered the spread five times in its last seven games and the total has gone over in four of those seven. The Mariners are 64-48 SU and have gone 55-57 ATS. Felix Hernandez is getting the nod for the visiting Mariners. The right-handed Hernandez (8-9, 5.49 ERA) has recorded 97 strikeouts in 117 innings so far. He’s 0-0 with nine strikeouts and a 6.10 ERA against Texas this year (two starts).

The Rangers are preparing to start righty Yovani Gallardo (6-1, 6.51 ERA), who’s got 30 punchouts and 23 walks to his credit, as well as a WHIP of 1.62. Gallardo has yet to face the Mariners this year and did not record a start against them in 2017.

As a unit, Texas’ pitching staff has yielded 5.2 runs per game overall this year. Its starters have a 5.29 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 6.6 strikeouts per nine innings. The bullpen has a 4.16 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 8.2 K/9. In 47 games against AL West opponents, Rangers starters have an ERA of 5.00 and the bullpen’s ERA is 4.70.

The Texas hitters are putting up 4.7 runs per outing, including 4.0 per game against divisional foes and 7.4 per game over their last five. The team has hit .278/.378/.497 over its last five contests and is 3-2 SU during that span.

The Rangers’ offense has been led by Shin-soo Choo and Nomar Mazara. Choo is hitting .276/.386/.480 with 20 home runs, 53 RBIs and 64 runs scored, and Mazara’s line is .272/.332/.450 with 15 homers, 58 RBIs and 46 runs.

In the other dugout, Seattle’s pitching staff allowed 4.3 runs per game and its starting pitchers own a 4.15 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 7.85 K/9. The bullpen has logged an ERA of 3.95, along with a K/9 of 9.53.

Mariners hitters have slashed .255/.317/.408 on their way to 4.1 runs scored per game this year, including 4.2 runs per game against divisional foes and 3.0 per game over the team’s last five contests (1-4 SU).

Shortstop Jean Segura and right fielder Dee Gordon continue to lead Seattle’s hitters. Segura is slashing .309/.338/.435 with eight home runs, 51 RBIs, 73 runs and 16 stolen bases, while Gordon is hitting .285/.305/.345 with one homers, 22 RBIs, 49 runs and 26 steals.

The Mariners have gained 16.9 units and are 38-38 ATS when facing a righty starter this season. The over has hit in 40 of those games, compared to 35 that’ve gone under in such games. On the other hand, the Rangers have lost 4.3 units and are 39-40 ATS when facing a righty starter. The over has cashed in 34 of those games, compared to 41 that went under the total.
