Obviously, it’s one thing to play a few hands of poker amongst friends. On the other hand, it’s a different story to ring up half-million in gambling debt. Now we have an athlete who has done the latter.
First, the meat of the news: Evander Kane of the San Jose Sharks is in serious debt.
The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas filed a lawsuit Monday in Clark County District Court alleging San Jose Sharks forward Evander Kane failed to pay back $500,000 in gambling markers the casino extended to him in April.
However, there’s more to the story. Allegedly, Kane had this debt add up back in the spring while in Vegas. This report is courtesy of the Las Vegas Review Journal.

Moreover, this happened during the playoffs; when Kane’s San Jose Sharks were in town to play the Golden Knights.
According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the court documents state that Kane took out eight credits of varying amounts between $20,000 and $100,000 on or about April 15. The date would have fallen between Games 3 and 4 of the first round playoff series between the Sharks and the Vegas Golden Knights.
Finally, Kane has been known to spend a lot of time in Las Vegas. For instance, here is a video where he spent time in a luxurious Vegas hotel.
Obviously, we will have more on this story as it develops. However, it could take some time until there is resolution.
In closing, watch your gambling folks. It’s a serious deal. Especially when it’s in these increments. One must wonder what Kane’s game of choice is – and whatever it was – he needs to stop.
