A focal point of Houston’s offense is the running game, which ranks seventh in the country with 307.2 rushing yards per game. Turning to the Cougars defense, there are several areas to keep an eye on. Expect the Mustangs to have a tough time running against the eighth-ranked Cougars run defense, which gives up 82 yards per game on the ground. The Mustangs will need to stop Houston’s defense from getting to their quarterbacks in order to be successful in this game. The Cougars rank 12th in the nation in sacks with 3.2 per game. In the first quarter, Houston is tough to stop, putting up 10.5 points in the first 15 minutes.
In the other locker room, the Mustangs fare well ATS, sitting at 3-2. However, they are only 1-4 SU this season. Chances are SMU will rely on its passing attack against a defense that allows 316.2 passing yards per game, ranking 125th in the nation. Teams need to stay focused in the first quarter against the fast-starting Mustangs, who average 10.2 points in the first 15 minutes. SMU is good at avoiding penalties this season. The team only receives 4.8 per game on average, the 19th-fewest in the country.
