On Saturday night at the Allphones Arena in Sydney Australia, Sonny Bill Williams takes on veteran Chauncy Welliver in a scheduled 10-round boxing match.
Williams is one of the best rugby players on the planet, and he is also 6-0 as a pro boxer. In fact, the entire Terry Devlin promoted card is filled with rugby players such as Willis Meehan and Paul Gallen, both of whom are 2-0 in boxing careers, and the debuting Liam Messam. The Allphones Arena can sit probably up to 20,000 people, so it will be intersting to see what kind of drawing power Williams has. He is big and athletic, and if he is a big draw he is a guy who could be guided to a big money fight. But for now, he is raw in terms of boxing skill and he would have to dedicate himself more completely to “The Sweet Science”.
As for Meehan, he is also a heavyweight and he is being schooled by his father, veteran boxer Kali Meehan (42-5), who in 2004 lost a razor-thin split decision to Lamon Brewster (114-113, 113-114, 113-115) that would have given him the WBO World heavyweight title.
In this latest blog, our veteran boxing blogger Miguel Iturrate takes a look at the odds on Sonny Boy Williams, in a match that is certainly going to be getting crossover attention from rugby as well.
