Hot Start for Detroit
The Pistons are 3-0 after a thrilling 133-132 overtime win against Philadelphia Tuesday. According to Mason, new head coach Dwane Casey has made a big difference for the Pistons.
“Credit Dwane Casey,” Mason said. “This is what he came in saying he was going to figure out for Detroit, and he did.”
Casey earned Coach of the Year honors after leading Toronto in 2017-18, but the Raptors fired him after yet another postseason loss to LeBron James and the Cavaliers.
“He’s teaching them to play winning basketball,” Mason said.
Blake Griffin Scorching
Individually, the former Clippers star has gotten off to strong start. He’s averaging 36.3 points per game, leading the league, as well as 11.3 rebounds and 5.7 assists.
“To me, Blake Griffin may have been showtime in California, but he is Detroit time now,” Mason said.
Mason added that Griffin has emerged as the team’s leader. The announcer compares Griffin’s pervasive leadership to that of Chauncey Billups.
Andre Drummond has also gotten off to a good start, averaging 16.0 points, 16.3 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game. He’s also hitting 63 percent of his free throws.
Mason attributes Drummond’s improvement to Griffin.
“A lot of it is the influence of Blake Griffin,” Mason said.
Griffin’s odds to win MVP are currently 50-1 at BetDSI.
Later in the podcast, our host and guest discussed Stanley Johnson, Reggie Jackson, Ish Smith, and Detroit’s chances of winning the East.
