The Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championships go down in Sao Paulo, Brazil this weekend. The two-day event runs on Saturday and Sunday, and the event features the top submission grapplers in the world in 16 man single elimination tournaments in five weight classes.
There are two weight classes on the women’s side as well, and the tournament also has an invitation only Absolute weight class and several super-fights planned.
The Absolute weight class is a 16-man tournament for the weekend that is open weight, with only the stand out competitors from the weight classes being invited. The winner of the Absolute tournament goes on to the Superfight next year and goes home with $50,000 in prize money.
This year’s Superfight features Roberto Abreu, who won the the ADCC 2013 Absolute tournament facing facing ADCC king-pin Andre Galvao. The last few years have seen Galvao establish himself as the world’s top submission fighter, and Abreau is considered to be the stiffest challenge he has ever faced.
The ADCC has also scheduled a “classic” superfight between Mario Sperry and Ricardo Liborio. Former teammates, Sperry was the first fighter who was turned into a superstar by the ADCC tournaments back in 1998, and Liborio went on to become the founder of the American Top Team and one of the most recognizable grapplers in the world.
