The season hasn’t even started and it’s already been a great week for the Tennessee Volunteers’ football program. Earlier this week, defensive tackle Aubrey Solomon was granted immediate eligibility by the NCAA, allowing the former five-star prospect to play this season. Things are even better now as another former five-star is set to play as Trey Smith has been cleared by Tennessee’s medical team.
BREAKING: Tennessee junior offensive lineman Trey Smith is officially cleared to play Week 1 vs. Georgia State.
Smith, who has battled blood clots for more than 18 months, is expected to start at left guard on Saturday for the Vols.

Trey Smith was the top recruit in the country according to ESPN in the Class of 2017. Smith was diagnosed with blood clots in his lungs 18 months ago, and the Tennessee medical staff advised him not to play in the second half of last season after he experienced the issue once again.
Smith was a busy man this offseason. He and his family traveled around the country meeting with teams of doctors to determine the best way forward, and he is ecstatic about being cleared to play. The offensive lineman told ESPN:
“My family and I consulted with several of the best doctors in the country, and a plan has been developed that allows me to compete with my teammates on game day,” Smith said. “My family and I are confident in that plan. The coaches and staff here at Tennessee have always had my best interests at heart, and I can’t thank them enough. Thanks to all of the fans and my teammates for all of their support.”
Initially, Trey Smith was playing offensive tackle. Smith played seven games at left tackle for Tennessee last season before being sidelined, but has been practicing with the team as a guard. He is expected to start along the offensive line tomorrow when the Volunteers take on Georgia State in their home opener.
To god be the ultimate glory. Without him I am nothing! 🙏🏾 https://t.co/NE6oWICQae
