Terrance Williams Could Ruin the Cowboys’ Plans

A funny thing happened as the Dallas Cowboys were about to open their first Organized Team Activities of 2018, their offense took another potential blow as Terrance Williams was busted Saturday morning for public intoxication after police discovered his crashed Lamborghini. The Cowboys are gearing up for a bounce-back season, but have already cut Dez Bryant and lost future Hall of Fame tight end Jason Witten to retirement and the Monday Night Football. This was something they did not need.

There’s plenty to unpack about Williams’ arrest. First off, the cops were specific with his “public intoxication” charge, since I’m pretty sure the Lamborghini didn’t crash itself. Second, and how’s this for irony, Williams just recently signed a deal to advertise and promote the Lyft ride-share service. One of the reasons that Lyft (and Uber) specifically exist is to keep people from crashing up their Lamborghinis while drunk.

The story gets even sillier from there. When police arrived at the scene to find said crashed Lamborghini, they discovered it was registered to Williams but he was nowhere to be found. They scoured the surrounding area only to find Williams, still allegedly drunk, riding an electric bicycle.

Now, Williams apparently never took a sobriety test and claims he was heading back to the car to wait for a tow truck after another car hit its brakes in front of him, causing him to run off the road. Williams could very well get away with everything legally. And, I mean, there’s always a chance he was telling the truth. Frankly, I don’t care.

Here’s the thing, Roger Goodell will. Goodell has made a point of sticking it to players even if the courts and prosecutors charge them with nothing. He also probably has an ax to grind with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones after their public feud over Ezekiel Elliott’s suspension last season.

So what can the Cowboys do?

Williams and Cole Beasley are the only wide receivers currently on the Dallas roster that played any significant time last year.  Even with the addition of Allen Hurns in free agency and drafting Michael Gallup out of Colorado State, they needed Williams to suit up this fall to make their offense work. Especially with the collection of potential Subway sandwich artists and Fudrucker’s Grillmasters they’ll be tossing onto the field at tight end in an attempt to replace Witten.

Williams is hardly irreplaceable as a talent, but and Prescott have some solid chemistry. Two seasons ago, when Prescott was a rookie, Williams had to step into the No. 1 role with Bryant out injured and performed pretty well. There’s a reason the kid got a contract big enough to where he could afford to use a Lamborghini as a bumper car.

Williams is reportedly sitting out of OTAs with a foot injury that no one is saying is Lamborghini or even electric bicycle related. This is actually a good thing because the sooner head coach Jason Garrett and offensive coordinator Scott Linehan can get Hurns and Gallup up to speed, the better the team will be prepared for Goodell to eventually lower the hammer on Williams.
