A tough start to the Premier League season has forced Swansea City’s board to consider making some serious changes to the team. At the top of the list of things to evaluate is manager Garry Monk, whose future with the club has become very tenuous. Monk took over for Michael Laudrup at Swansea in February of 2014 and led the club to its highest Premier League finish ever but there has been a major drop off this season. Entering the weekend, Swansea City has just 14 points and currently sits in 14th place in the English Premier League standings table. Something has to give soon with the Swans struggling near the bottom of the table. Here is a look at the four biggest reasons why Swansea City should sack Monk.
The Results Aren’t Good Enough
Monk was able to help turn things around in 2014 and guide Swansea to a very successful season. That was the biggest reason he was brought back as manager. However, the results have worked against him this year with Swansea limited to just three wins through its first 13 games. They’re only five points out of the relegation zone. This is a team that’s scored just 14 goals in 13 games this season while giving up 18 in their contests. Their -4 goal differential is the eighth worst in the league. Results aren’t always be the best gauge by which to assess a manager’s performance but in this case they are a prime indication that Monk has worn out his welcome.
Lack Of Direction
In addition to their recent struggles, the board will also have to take in to account the club’s lack of direction with no clear course for turning things around and getting this season back on track. Swansea has the talent to be at least a top 10 team in the table but has let some very winnable games get away from them this year. Nobody has been pleased with the latest few results, which include a 2-2 draw to a very beatable Bournemouth side, a 1-0 loss to Norwich City and a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of Arsenal. With no clear plan to get this season back on track it is only a matter of time before the club is forced to shake things up.
Potential Coaching Staff Exits
In addition to the team’s poor play, Monk is also dealing with the fact that assistant manager Pep Clotet could be on his way out of town with persistent rumors that he is on the shortlist of candidates to become Brentford’s new bench boss. Monk reportedly wasn’t pleased with the reports and there has been speculation that Clotet would take first-team coach James Beattie with him should he decide to leave. Swansea is in a tough position right now and with all of the speculation surrounding the club’s coaching staff there is reason for the board to be that much more concerned. It’s not a particularly good look as the general perception is that the ship is sinking and the quality members of the coaching staff are looking to bail.

Finding A Long Term Solution
Monk was put in charge of the club following Laudrup’s dismissal and the fact that he was able to help Swansea turn its season around was the biggest reason for expectations that the club could be able to take another step forward this season. However, that clearly hasn’t been the case to this point and with plenty of speculation surrounding the team, it is clear a long-term solution has to be established. Monk has not done enough to prove that he deserves to be Swansea’s manager moving forward and the time is now to address the speculation surrounding the coaching staff and make sure the best options are in place to solidify the club’s outlook moving forward not just for this season but moving forward to future years as well.
