So You Think You Can Dance: 8/8 Recap

It’s the first two-hour live show of So You Think You Can Dance and we’re going to get a closer look at the Top 10 this week.

As usual, the show opens up with a beautiful group dance that I enjoy almost as much as the solo stuff. Wait, it was a Travis Wall dance? Of course it was. Now, I love the other choreographers too, but Travis has ‘it.’

As a reminder, here are your top 10:

Chelsea
Cole
Genessy
Darius
Hannahlei
Evan
Jensen
Jay Jay
Magda
Slavik

The winner of Season 15 will also join the cast of the upcoming live musical Rent.

Jay Jay and Jensen are paired together and their first dance is the Samba. Jay Jay has never done samba before. Dancing to Mad Love, there are lifts and the moves are quick and seamless so far. Of course, this is Jensen’s style of dance so she looks amazing. The last drop was a little awkward, but they did it. Mary said it was “great.” Nigel said that Jay Jay did great.

Hannahlei and Cole are partnered and this first dance is a dance by Tyce to “They Won’t Go When I Go”. It’s a slow, emotional dance and the two of them dance it beautifully. The judges agree.

Chelsea and Evan are paired together and dance a jazz routine (her style) choreographed by Ray Leeper. I like the routine and find myself watching Evan more than Chelsea, which says a lot for the tap dancer.

Genessy and Slavik perform a hip-hop (Slavik’s style) routine. I like the dance and I like Slavik, but Genessy is definitely holding her own even though it’s not her style. All the judges are on their feet. Mary told Genessy that “you slayed it!”

Darius and Magda are doing contemporary (Darius’ style) and being choreographed by Travis Wall (lucky!), dancing to Glass Heart Concerto. I’m breathless. That was amazing.

In their second dance, Hannahlei and Cole are dancing again to the Pasa Doble. It immediately starts out strong and intense and I love it. Great dance and great music.

Jay Jay and Jensen are doing a jazz routine with choreographer Mandy Moore to Ex’s and Oh’s. Nigel talks about controlled sexuality, not overtly sexual. I thought it was intense and, well, kinda hot.

Evan and Chelsea are doing tap together (Evan’s style) and they are doing Singin’ in the Rain (you’re going to have to seriously impress me here because you’re messing with an iconic song). It was a nice gentle version of the song and I think they met the challenge. Vanessa didn’t like it and, of course, Chelsea struggled with it, but hey she got through it.

Genessy and Slavik are dancing contemporary now and Slavik’s style is freestyle, so this is hard for him. Beautiful choreography and beautiful dancing. Twitch said “Slavik your level of commitment it was a very nice job.”

Last up for the night is Magda and Darius doing ballroom – the cha cha. That was fun and, of course, Magda did a great job.  Darius definitely held his own.

Who do I think would be going home after this week based on these two performances? Sadly, I think it’s Evan and Chelsea. We’ll see.
