This Week in Viral Baseball

I'm not sure we still have any idea how fast Billy Hamilton is.

We might be heading toward the lazy days of summer, but there’s still plenty of oddball events happening in and around baseball to keep your YouTube and social network feed full. Here are a few you might have missed from this month.

We all know Cincinnati Reds outfielder Billy Hamilton is fast. I watched the kid play in the Southern League three years ago with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos and nobody could stop him stealing then, but this week, facing off against the Miami Marlins, Hamilton took it to an entirely different level, stealing third on the throwback to the pitcher. Watch.

We’ve seen some spectacular double plays in major league baseball, even the first 4-5-4 triple play in major league history, but I don’t think any of us was prepared for the sheer stooge-ery on display in what I’m calling “The Worst Double-Play Ever.” It happened on July 10 in an inter-league game between the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Cubs. Enjoy.

Do you like New York Mets first baseman Lucas Duda? Then you’ll be ecstatic to know that his teammates, specifically Curtis Granderson, John Mayberry Jr. and Dany Muno have created the perfect Instagram account for you. Called “WeFollowLucasDuda,” the three have dedicated the page to their teammate, posting photos and tributes to him over the last few days, many times without his knowledge.

If you like the St. Louis Cardinals, comedian and actor and all around super guy Bill Murray disagrees with you.

And finally, it’s not technically baseball, but it’s close enough. Sometime Wednesday two dads exchanged hateful text messages concerning Dad No. 1’s daughter and her removal from the softball roster. Words got heated, challenges were made and each man demanded satisfaction. At 6:08 p.m. according to a report in a local paper, they arrived at the Wicomico County Youth and Civic Center to discuss it further. With their fists. Below is the evidence.

Both guys were arrested at the scene after Dad No. 1, Michael Barbella, had his face put back together by EMTs. Dad No. 2, Michael Duffy, was then awarded a one-year contract with Bellator.
