Thurman, Joshua Score Big Wins – This past weekend was a huge one for boxing, as two major fights took place in London and Brooklyn that have an immediate effect on the rankings.
The Barclays Center saw Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter duel for Thurman’s WBA world welterweight title. The fight aired on CBS in the United States, and afterwards both fighters got rave reviews. Thurman narrowly edged Porter by judges scores of 115-113, 115-113, 115,113 and no one has seemed against a re-match.
Thurman is now 27-0 and though a Porter rematch might be appealing, bigger and better things await him in the immediate future. Looming is undefeated WBC welterweight champion Danny Garcia (31-0), and with both men fighting under the Premier Boxing Champions flag, that appears to be the most important match on the horizon. Also waiting in the wings is Kell Brook, who owns the IBF world title at welterweight, a title he took from Shawn Porter. Brook took the title back in 2014 when he faced Porter in Vegas, but he has not shown a propensity to leave England again. A bout with Brook would be the logical next step for the winner of Thurman versus Garcia. The bottom line is that the Premier Boxing Champions needs to make Thurman versus Garcia ASAP.

Porter is always a positive type of guy, and he has already stated that he is re-focusing on his goal of winning a second world title. Porter had his best moments in round 9 of the fight, and he feels he won the encounter. He has been classy in his protests however, giving kudos to Thurman. Though it didn’t add up that way, a draw would have likely received little argument from many people.
Thurman, Joshua Score Big Wins
In London, IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua dispatched Dominic Breazeale with a seventh round knock out. The fight aired on Showtime International in the United States, and for many fans it was their first time seeing Joshua, the 2012 Olympic Gold Medalist who has been fast tracking his career in his home country of England. After his domination of Breazeale, who was a 2012 Olympian himself, Joshua has entered the American consciousness. Obviously, WBC world heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder knew about Joshua, but the latest win for the Brit has started the dialog between the two fighters. Wilder is scheduled to face Chris Arreola on July 16th after which you can expect the rhetoric between the two men to pick up.

Promoter Eddie Hearn, who put on this weekend’s Joshua vs Breazeale bout and has handled Joshua’s career since he turned professional, is keen to bring Joshua to the United States for a fight. Joshua too expressed his desire to fight stateside, with 2017 being the most likely arrival time.
At 26 years old, Joshua is in no hurry as he follows his game plan. The bottom line is that Oscar De La Hoya and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez are too busy telling everyone that Alvarez is the biggest draw in boxing
