Players get taped up for various injuries all the time in the NFL. Most of the time, the media wouldn’t even notice or care if a player had black tape on his hand.
But when Tom Brady is donning some drapery, it’s headline news. Will Tom Brady wearing a bandage become the storyline of Super Bowl 52? Our Super Bowl 52 prop analysis continues with a look at the most famous hand in football today.
The Patriots are always quiet with their injuries. They listed Brady as questionable with a hand injury all week leading up the AFC Championship Game. It’s nothing new for the Pats to list Brady with some sort of ailment; they did so 186 times coming into this season, and for the most part, there was no doubt TB12 was going to suit up.
Thus, when the news surfaced of Brady having a bandage on his throwing hand, there was never really serious concern that he was going to play against the Jaguars. Just how effective was Brady going to be with a bandage on his hand? That was up for debate.
But debate no more. Against the Jaguars, Brady took plenty of snaps under center, including one in which he plunged forward near the goal-line immediately after taking the snap. He went 26-for-38 for 290 yards and two touchdowns. For a man who was questioned no less than 20 times on the broadcast by Jim Nantz and Tony Romo, Brady sure looked fine from our vantage point.
After the game, Brady stood on the podium while accepting his eighth Lamar Hunt Trophy and said that, “It was a pretty good cut.”
Adam Schefter reported that Brady received 12 stitches beneath his right thumb heading into the game.
NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo later reported that Brady hurt himself at practice while handing the ball off to Rex Burkhead.
Just as Curt Schilling’s bloody sock, Walt Frazier’s infamous limp and Kirk Gibson’s World Series home run all became a part of sports lore, Brady’s bandage will be the next injury that is iconized forever.
Will Tom Brady Be Wearing a Bandage On His Right Hand During Super Bowl 52?
The biggest question for the oddsmakers at BetDSI.eu is whether Brady will be wearing his now-famous bandage come Super Sunday.
At this point in his career, it isn’t shocking to hear that Brady hates wearing anything on his throwing hand.
“Early in my career I tried using the glove on my throwing hand a little bit. It didn’t go too well,” said Brady. “I think it’s better without.”
Brady hasn’t regularly worn a glove on his right hand since 2002. He wasn’t about to change that in the AFC Championship Game against Jacksonville, and he surely won’t be gloved up indoors for the Super Bowl at U.S. Bank Stadium.
Whether he’s still wearing that bandage come Super Sunday is a different story. The oddsmakers at BetDSI Sportsbook have lined Brady as a -130 favorite to be wearing a bandage on his right hand at the Super Bowl.
