Looking back at last year’s top Premier League goal scorers is basically reading out a list of some of the most talented strikers in England’s top flight. The names included are Sergio Aguero, Harry Kane, Diego Costa and Alexis Sanchez among the top scorers.
However, this year’s list has a much different look through the first few weeks of action, which is highlighted by the fact that none of the players listed above ranks among the highest goal scorers. What’s even more surprising is that the EPL giants like Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea don’t have any names on this list. If you’ve been playing fantasy, you’ve been left scratching your head on a number of occasions.
Here is a breakdown of the top six scorers in the Premier League so far this season.
Riyad Mahrez, Leicester City
5 Goals
The 24-year-old Mahrez has already exceeded his goal total from a year ago when he scored four goals in 25 Premier League games. Leicester is undefeated through its first six games with three wins and three draws and their offense has been the biggest reason for their success. Their 13 goals is tied with West Ham United for the most in England’s top flight so far. The potential is certainly there for Mahrez to slow down but with five goals already, it’s clear he is ready for the spotlight this season.
Callum Wilson, AFC Bournemouth
5 Goals
Newly promoted Bournmouth is a respectable 2-1-3 through its first six games in the Premier League and Wilson’s performance up front is among the biggest reasons for their relative success. H he is tied for Mahrez for the most goals early on with five. For fantasy purposes, it’s worth noting he had a hat trick, so three of his five goals came in one game. Wilson is a rising star and he will play an absolutely crucial role for Bournenouth as they look to make sure they stay in the top division moving forward.
Odion Ighalo, Watford
4 Goals
The theme of relatively unknown players leading the Premier League in scoring continues with the Nigerian forward Ighalo, who has three goals in his last two games to give him four on the season. Watford has scored only five goals through six games this year and Ighalo has accounted for four of them.
Bafetimbi Gomis, Swansea City
4 Goals
Swansea has gone winless in consecutive games for the first time this season and Gomis’ situation is certainly an intriguing one. The veteran striker scored a goal in each of his first four games before failing to find the back of the net in each of the last three. However, he continues to fire shots at the net every chance he gets, which is a good sign. It will be interesting to see if he can heat up again.

Jamie Vardy, Leicester City
4 Goals
Leicester City is the only Premier League team with two scorers ranked in the top six with Vardy joining Mahrez as two stars that have led the way for them. That tandem has combined for nine goals. Vardy has scored in each of Leicester’s last three Premier League games and that’s a big reason why they are undefeated through six games this season.
Graziano Pelle, Southampton
4 Goals
Southampton has just one win to show for its first six games of the season but the Italian striker Pelle is certainly not to blame. He has four goals through already to round out the list of the top six goal scorers in the Premier League. Pelle has fired 29 shots already and as long as he continues to get his opportunities, he should continue to lead the way for Southampton up front. They need more than just him, though, as they only have seven goals on the season. That ranks them 11th in the EPL in scoring. They’ll need the supporting cast to stand up if they’re to turn it around.
