Player-mascot interactions are fun, but especially so when the player instigates the foolishness. Padres infielder Manny Machado got that done with the Braves mascot, Blooper, on Monday night. Speaking of fun, Amir Garrett and Joey Votto had some for the Cincinnati Reds, and so did the team’s broadcast crew with Jesse Winker. Not so fun: Fernando Tatis Jr.’s replacement making made some errors for the Padres. Fun for those in St. Louis: The Cardinals are off to one of their fastest starts ever.

Don’t give Manny Machado an inch, they said. Don’t fall for it, they said. Oh, Blooper.

Reds relief pitcher Amir Garrett had an explanation for why he and Joey Votto raced each other off the field at the end of an inning against the Mets.

That game, by the way, was won with Jesse Winker’s ninth-inning home run. The broadcast crew had some fun with Winker after the game, and he was having none of it.

Machado was having fun, but his partner in infield glory for the Padres, Fernando Tatis Jr, was missing because of a hamstring injury. San Diego, um, missed their phenom on this play.

Yes, we know the season started earlier this year than most, so 18 victories by the end of April isn’t quite as impressive as it has been in other years. But this is still the Cardinals we’re talking about, and any time a historic franchise does something for the first time, you’ve got to pay attention.
