Top Rank Boxing Sept 10 Odds – The Tachi Palace Hotel & Casino in Lemoore, California hosts Top Rank boxing this Saturday night with a fight card that sees the main events air on spanish language cable station UniMas in the United States.
Heavyweight action takes center stage as undefeated 27 year old prospect Andy Ruiz Jr (28-0) takes on veteran Franklin Lawrence (21-2-2). Ruiz Jr has long been the top heavyweight on Bob Arum and Top Rank’s roster, but that weight class has not been a priority for Top Rank in the last few years and Ruiz has seen his career stall at times. Now however, things are starting to fall into place for Ruiz after a rocky ending to 2015 tha tsaw him pull out of scheduled fights on two separate occasions. Ruiz Jr fought and picked up wins in May and July of this year, and this outing against Lawrence was more ring time until a big fight materializes.
As a young heavyweight of Mexican descent, Ruiz Jr needs to stay focused and he should see big fights come his way. This week, it was announced that he will be travelling to England to face undefeated 20 year old Hughie Fury (20-0) on the undercard of Tyson Fury’s world heavyweight title re-match against Wladimir Klitschko at the Manchester Arena. RUiz Jr has stated he has a goal of being the first world heavyweight champion of Mexican descent, and he finally may be mature nough to pursue that dream. He needs a win this weekend to not get derailed.
Ruiz Jr will have to beat Lawrence first. Lawrence is a 40 year old veteran who has put together a nice nine fight winning streak since he took an August of 2009 loss to former world titleholder Oliver McCall. Lawrence logged a win this past March when he scored a TKO stoppage of journeyman Grover Young (12-18-3) but that fight came after a 15 month layoff, and he had a 20 month layoff as well from 2013 into 2014. He likely does not belong in this fight.

Former lightweight world title contender raymundo Beltran returns to face veteran Tomas Mendez in a ten round bout. Beltran won his May of 2016 fight against Ivan Najera tat saw him return after a year layoff that included a suspension for PED use, and this match against the veteran Dominican fighter in Mendez is Beltran logging some consistent ring time and nothing more. Mendez is 0-2 in 2016 and is 5-7 in his last twelve bouts dating back to March of 2012.

It is unlikely any other fights from this card pop up at the books, as the undercard features bouts of the 4 and 6 round variety. Undefeated Danny Valdivia (11-0) faces Gilberto Pereira dos Santos in an eight round bout wth the NABF’s Junior title at 154 pounds on the line.
