Triple G Britain Bound? – The big news in the boxing world has been the vacating of the WBC middleweight title by Mexico’s Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. The WBC turned around and handed the belt to Gennady Golovkin, and thwe whole series of moves and counter-moves has left the boxing world with the “Canelo” vs “Triple G” showdown a lot further away from happening.
The whole episode has appeared to heap negative reactions on Alvarez, who is perceived to be avoiding a fight with Triple “G”. For their part, the Golovkin camp is said to be looking for a big money fight at 160 lbs, but he is having trouble finding a dance partner. Alvarez best fits that bill, however Alvarez and his camp may feel that fight is better suited for May of next year, where Alvarez maximizes his monetization during Mexican independence day week.

But Golovkin likes to stay active, and that means he will have to fight someone besides Alvarez. Golovkin too is not beyond criticism as his list of opponents is starting to look weak.
Making this news this week with a pretty concentrated challenge is England’s Chris Eubank Jr (22-1) the second generation fighter who is yearning to break out of England and onto the world scene and big money. Eubank Jr does bring a blend of skill, speed and pedigree that is far stronger than anything Golovkin has faced, and with world economics being what they are, the fight will likely take place in London.
It will be interesting to see what Golovkin makes for a fight in the U.K. With a strong audience in that country, far stronger than in the United States, a gig against Eubank Jr could be quite lucrative. Furthermore, it opens the door for a future fight with Billy Joe Saunders, the only man to put a blemish on Eubank’s record and currently the WBO’s world title holder. Look for Golovkin’s handlers to set up a series of matches in England for Golovkin, as he has shown a willingness to fight on the road in the past and he has expressed interest in exposing himself to new markets. Does all of that likely make Triple GGG Britain Bound?
Triple G Britain Bound? And More on T’n’S
The rumors are no longer rumors, and the speculation is not going away. Floyd Mayweather Jr has continued adding fuel to the fire that he will return in September to face MMA fighter Conor McGregor in his 50th boxing match. The latest was that Mayweather released a poster hyping the fight, and aside from his promotional company and his TMT logo, the psoter included Showtime and CBS’ logo so somewhere there are lawyers trying to make this fight happen. Why is Floyd Mayweather Jr doing this? For the money of course, as the current market likely shows that no single professional boxer will craw for Mayweather what McGregor does.
Also in the news this week, another high level boxer has gone down with a failed PED test and that is Lucien Bute. When last we saw Bute, he was facing Badou Jack for the WBC’s world title at 168 lbs in Washington D.C. on April 30th and he emerged from the fight with a draw.
