Tuberville says NCAA is scared of their shadow about NIL issues

In an effort to develop a government response to name, image, and likeness concerns, the commissioners of the Power 5 conferences of collegiate athletics this week proposed a legislative framework to U.S. Sens. Tommy Tuberville and Joe Manchin. The commissioners’ letter to Tuberville and Manchin contained policy recommendations that included safeguarding for student-athletes and maintaining openness in NIL transactions.

According to Tuberville, the NCAA’s lack of participation in NIL’s administration stems from its apprehension over potential legal repercussions. “To be very honest with you, I hate that we had to become engaged in this,” he remarked. “The NCAA’s only concern is with their shadow. Because they are concerned about litigation, they won’t take any action. And it is currently an issue in our nation. People must take a position and act morally. And because they haven’t done it, all of these sports—including women’s sports and Olympic sports—are now in danger.” This assertion echoes the ideas put out by Nick Saban.
