UCLA News: Bruins Complete Wild Comeback Win Over Washington State

Richard Mackson-USA TODAY Sports

The UCLA Bruins pulled off the most stunning win of the weekend in college football. It appeared all was lost after they fell behind Washington State 49-17 in the third quarter in Pullman, but the Bruins roared back to eventually secure a 67-63 win. It was one of the most wild victories you’ll ever see as UCLA scored 50 points in the final 19 minutes to notch its first win of the season.

After Washington State went up by 32 points with 6:52 to go in the third quarter, the Cougars were given a 99.9 percent chance to win the game according to ESPN. However, Washington State couldn’t stop shooting themselves in the foot, allowing the Bruins to get back into the game.

Wazzou turned the ball over a whopping six times in a game where they scored 63 points. Three different wide receivers fumbled, but that was just one of the footnotes in a game that had it all.

Anthony Gordon tossed a school-record nine passing touchdowns in the loss for Washington State. He broke former quarterback Gardner Minshew’s record (while Minshew was in attendance), and his nine touchdowns through the air were also a Pac 12 record.

Incredibly, UCLA only converted 3 of 11 third down opportunities on the night. The Bruins were very much boom or bust on offense, and there was a lot of boom in the second half.

UCLA quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson had a career day. He completed 25 of 38 passes for 507 yards with five touchdowns and an interception, and he ran for 57 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Demetric Felton was his favorite target with seven catches for 150 yards and two touchdowns.

The victory was a needed one for Chip Kelly. Kelly went 3-9 in his first year at UCLA in 2018, and the Bruins were off to an 0-3 start this year. UCLA gave Washington State its first loss of the year.

Formerly undefeated teams Utah, Arizona State, and Washington State all lost this week, leaving the Pac 12 with just one unbeaten team. That likely means the conference’s playoff drought will extend this year.
