In a move that makes all the sense in the world, the University of Connecticut is reportedly set to join the Big East in 2020. UConn was a charter member of the original Big East in 1979, but the Huskies left for the AAC after being repeatedly skipped over during conference realignment. Now, it appears that UConn is going home and that has led to speculation regarding who the AAC will bring in to replace the Huskies.
I can confirm that UConn is awaiting official invitation to the Big East and a formal announcement of the move is forthcoming. First reported by @DigSportsDesk
UConn football likely lands in another conference or goes independent, starting in 2020 season.— Mike Anthony (@ManthonyHearst) June 22, 2019
UConn was one of the big losers during conference realignment. The Huskies were left in no man’s land after Big East schools with established football programs like Louisville, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, and West Virginia left for major conferences, while basketball-centric schools (the Catholic 7) prioritized the round ball. The AAC was never the right fit for UConn, and they are finally going back to a more natural fit.

With UConn on the verge of rejoining the Big East, people are wondering which schools the AAC will consider to replace them. Louisiana Tech, Southern Miss, and Marshall make some sense as full members from a football perspective, but Pete Thamel suggests a rather interesting option. The AAC won’t keep UConn as a football-only member due to the poor state of their program, but Army is an option to join for just football. The Black Knights are once again a solid football team under Jeff Monken, and they have a rivalry with Navy that would instantly be the best in the conference. Army has a national following other potential replacements simply don’t, making them a prime candidate. VCU is a potential candidate as a basketball-only member.

Jeremiah Holloman was dismissed by the University of Georgia yesterday. Holloman allegedly choked and punched his girlfriend in April 2018, but that incident only came to light in June of this month. He was the Bulldogs’ leading returning receiver from 2018.
