Dustin Poirier TKOs Bobby Green in round one
In dominant fashion, Dustin Poirier sealed the deal against Bobby Green in the first round.
From the start, both Poirier and Green began trading and feeling each other out. Once Green got comfortable and began taunting, it was detrimental for him. Poirier was ready for it and doubled up on the left hand to stun Green initially. From then on, Poirier stayed in Green’s face with a steady jab to line up his left straight on multiple occassion. Green recovered, but continued to taunt and eat punches. A grazing left hand finally put Green down for the last time to get the finish.
Poirier made a strong claim here that his stand up could be among the best in the division. Now that he doesn’t have to dehydrate himself so much to make weight, he can stay in the pocket and afford to eat a couple shots to land his own. This fight only showed that his power is not easy to shake off, and his accuracy is good enough even against fighters with good head movement like Green.
Dan Henderson KOs Hector Lombard with sensational kick/elbow
After nearly getting finished himself, Dan Henderson rallied back in round two to get the KO win.
It doesn’t get much more dramatic than that. Henderson started things off well as he briefly stunned Lombard with a right straight. Henderson pushed forward, looking for the finish, but ran into a big left hand that dropped him. Lombard whipped him to the mat, transitioned to a mounted crucifix, and cranked the straight armbar. Henderson hung tough though and managed to squirm out. Henderson was dropped again with another left hand, but survived until the end of the round.
In the second, Henderson timed a right high kick that landed flush on Lombard. The kick stunned Hector, but it was a follow-up back elbow that knocked Lombard out. Henderson followed up with two more smashing elbows that put Lombard into a deep sleep. What a sensational performance by the 45 year old!
Max Holloway out-slugs Ricardo Lamas in classic
In perhaps his finest performance to date, young Max Holloway out-boxed Ricardo Lamas for a clean unanimous decision win.
Holloway pressured Lamas and teed off with crisp punching combinations which had Lamas hurt several times throughout the fight. Lamas sought out the takedown, but continually ran into submission danger. Holloway latched onto the neck and nearly had the guillotine on several occassion.
Lamas had a brief hint of hope in round two when he seemingly stunned Holloway in the middle of a swarming combination. Then, to start round three, Lamas had brought a different level of intensity. But in the end, Lamas just couldn’t keep up with the striking intelligence of Holloway. During the last ten seconds, Holloway and Lamas engaged in a genuine toe-to-toe slug fest to put a cap on the event. Fantastic bout, and a great showcase for Max Holloway.
Dominick Cruz out-duels Urijah Faber
In traditional Dominick Cruz fashion, he out-dueled challenger Urijah Faber throughout five rounds.
Cruz stayed agile and mobile as usual, avoiding Faber’s best shots while landing his own. In particular, in the second round, Cruz planted Faber with a left straight. Faber was forced to be more tentative than usual and while this fight didn’t go down like their last outting, it was still a dominant win for Cruz. Faber did well late in the fight avoiding Cruz’s heavy shots, but ultimately just couldn’t establish any sort of momentum. Great win by the Dominator.
Michael Bisping stuns and KOs Luke Rockhold
In the first round, Michael Bisping became the new UFC middleweight by knocking out Luke Rockhold.
Both men came out cautious and exchanged shots at range. Rockhold, tentative to throw the kick, pawed with the jab and a few lead kicks. Bisping on the other hand looked to get his distance down with his hands. An exchange featured Luke’s quick, sniper-like jab countered by Bisping’s flurry. A left hook over the top dropped Rockhold. Luke quickly rebounded and came up, but Bisping followed it up with another left hand to put Rockhold unconscious. What a win for Michael Bisping!
