Fight Preview for the co main event on the UFC 223
On November 4, 2017, Thug Rose Namajunas shocked the world by knocking out Joanna Jedrzejczyk in the first round, taking the straw weight title from the super dominant champion. Joanna was actually going for her sixth title defense which would have been a record, taking over from Rhonda Rousey, before Thug Rose spoiled the party in spectacular fashion with a beautiful straight right that dropped Joanna, and she couldn’t recover. The fight was stopped in what was an outstanding knockout for Thug Rose. I think Thug Rose should be the favorite in the UFC 223 fight, and I’m not sure why she is the underdog. I think she did enough in the first fight and in her previous fights to warrant bing the favorite. But Joanna was super dominant as a champion so that could be shy she is the -130 favorite.
Thug Rose
Thug Rose is outstanding on the ground and has a few submissions in the UFC. She came into the UFC from the Ultimate Fighter. She lost to Carla Esparza, someone who Joanna has beaten, and she also has a lost to Karolina Kowalkiewicz, in what was a split decision very close fight. That fight was a very tough stand up war, and I think she should have gotten the fight to the ground or at least try to a little more, but she decided to stand and bang with the Muay Thai specialist, and she lost the split decision.
Joanna Jedrzejczyk
Kowalkiewicz actually went on to lose to Joanna in her title fight. Joanna Jedrzejczyk is a super decorated Muay Thai Amatuer Champion, World Champion, and four time European Muay Thai World Champion, before making her move into MMA. She has looked spectacular in the cage barring her fight where she was knocked out by Thug Rose. At 14 – 1 Joanna has been almost perfect. Her stand up game is outstanding, but we really haven’t seen anything of her off of her back. She does do a pretty good job of getting back to her feet when she gets taken down, and the pressure she puts on her opponents is super relentless. I don’t think she will be able to impose that on Thug Rose. Rose is now 25. She is not as young as she was when she fought Kowalkiewicz, and she seems to be coming into her own as a fighter. She is a lot stronger than she was in her earlier fights, and I think she is going to pose even more problems for Joanna Jedrzejczyk in this fight
Pick:
I’m going to pick Thug Rose by submission in the second round in this fight. I really think that Thug Rose is going to be able to get this fight to the ground and get Joanna in an arm bar. Joanna’s ground game is not very high level, although Thug Rose is only a Blue Belt in Jujitsu, but she is very crafty. Thug Rose is one of the best in Straw Weight and I really think she is going to put that on display this time. I don’t think she is going to try to stand and bang as much as she did with Kowalkiewicz. I think she is going to come in with a smarter game plan and walk away with the Straw Weight title.
