This Saturday in Berlin, Germany the UFC’s Fight Night event was headlined for the first time by a women’s strawweight title fight between champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk took out game challenger Jessica Penne in a classic fight that is sure to elevate the ladies divisions.
Kudos to Penne, a former Invicta FC Champion at the Atomweight 105 lb. division. At the end of the first round, Penne landed a nice takedown that put the champion on her head, but she had spent the entire first round getting peppered by Joanna’s accurate striking.
By the end of the second round, Penne was a mess, with a mouse forming on her head and blood everywhere. Her nose was likey broken, and she found Jedrzejczyk merciless, as the champion continued to pour on the damage. I don’t think anyone would have blamed Penne for not coming out for Round 3, but she did.
Penne came out for the third looking obviously tired, but her corner had stopped the bleeding. She was exhausted, but she almost withstood the entire round as Jedzrzejcyk continued to unleash a torrent of punches, elbows, kicks and knees. Nearing the end of the round, the referee stepped in to stop the onslaught as Penne was reduced to just covering up.
Overall, the UFC has done a remarkable job of ramping up the women’s 115 lb class, and Jedrzejczyk has been a leader. Like Madonna or Prince it is time to just start calling this girl Joanna, since it saves on spelling that last name. She has backed it u though by backing up and doing everything she has said she was going to do.
The UFC has delivered a series of the “TUF” reality how featuring the 115 lb women, and as well as former champion Carla Esparza, one of the participants Tecia Torres continues to make a claim for a title shot with an undefeated record. Additionally, the UFC recently signed Jessica Aguilar, an athlete who has been on top of the 115 lb division since before the UFC launched the weight class.
