UFC Fight Night 131 Odds – The UFC hits upstate NY this Friday with Fight Night 131, a card headlined by Jimmie Rivera vs Marlon Moraes in bantamweight action.
Though the suporting card is considered lackluster by UFC standards, the main event at 135 pounds is basically a fight that is impossible to pick. The winner could wind up with the next title shot after TJ Dillashaw and Cody Garbrandt meet on August 4th.
Moraes is just 2-1 with the UFC, but prior to that he was a perfect 11-0 with the World Series of Fighting, where he held their 135 pound belt through several defenses. Moraes dueled tough Brazilian Raphael Assuncao to a split decisionin his UFC debut and he ha run off two victories since. It took him roughly 67 secnds to knock out Aljimain Sterling this past December in a fight that served notice to the division that Moraes was a player.
We have not seen Jimmie Rivera in almost a year, but everything we saw of him prior makes us want to see more. He has gone 5-0 with the UFC and his last two wins come against highly regarded Thomas Almeida of Brazil and Urijah Faber, who is basically bantamweight royalty. A win over Moraes and Rivera would have a very solid argument for a title shot.
No over/under lines were posted when this was written, but this fight will almost certainly go the distance. In the eight UFC fights on the total resumes of both men, each has gotten out of a fight inside the distance just once.
Welterweight action sees veterans Jake Ellenberger and Ben Saunders clash. On his way up, Ellenbrger earned the nickname “The Juggernaut” but he has fallen on hard times, going 2-8 in his last ten bouts. Granted, many of those fights came against top notch competition, but the slide in Ellenberger is apparent. He also never overcame a gas tank that fails him in rounds 2 and 3. He can still punch the daylights out of someone however and that is what most expect he will do to the feather-chinned Saunders.
And that is very well what might happen. Ellenberger will start the fight with some explosion and he will be faster than the ponderous Sunders throughout. Saunders is there to be hit.
But credit Saunders with some “Octagon-craft” for lack of a better word. Saunders is 0-2 in his last two fights and he has been stopped in both of those. Saunders knows exactly what Ellenberger brings to the table and if he can avoid the big punch and drag the fight into the later rounds, Ellenberger always fades.
