The UFC Fight Night 71 is set for Wednesday in San Diego and is headlined by heavyweights Frank Mir and Todd Duffee. For Mir, he is trying to win a second fight in a row after a four fight losing streak, while Duffee is just looking for some consistency after all his health issues.
Duffee is still young and considered promising. But with no consistent fights on his resume since 2010 and major health questions, his 33-second win over Anthony Hamilton in December is not enough to remove all doubts. Against Mir, he has a real veteran to test him.
The lightweight main event sees “The Ultimate Fighter’ alumni Tony Ferguson trying to continue his strong run as he faces veteran Josh Thomson. Ferguson has won five in a row and he is 8-1 overall in the UFC, so he is on the cusp of inserting himself into the title picture. For his part, Thomson has dropped two fights in a row and he has not fought in roughly a year, so it remains to be seen if Thomson is grabbing a payday or if, at 36 years old, he is coming in serious and ready to try another run at the top.
The other interesting major bout on this card features women bantamweights, as former boxing world champion Holly Holm returns for her second UFC fight to take on Marion Reneau. Holm was not impressive in her UFC debut where she won a split decision over Raquel Pennington, so whe is under a good bit of pressure to perform in this fight against Reneau, who has won six fights in a row and could be getting underestimated here.
