This weekend’s UFC comes to us from Brazil and airs on Fox Sports 1 with a main event featuring veteran welterweights Carlos Condit and Thiago Alves in what amounts to comeback fights for both.
Condit is a former interim champion and was at one point considered one of the top three welterweights in the world. Now he is returning to the octagon after healing an injury that has kept him out of action for 14 months. He came out of his last fight against Tyrome Woodley with a knee injury and a loss, giving him a 1-3 record in his last four fights. It makes no sense for Condit to comeback to be an average fighter, he must feel he is ready for another run at the top, but the 14 months off could lead to ring rust as well.
Alves was also one of the divisions top guys a few years back, and he has won two fights in a row, including a January win against Jordan Mein. Before that he went the distance with Seth Baczinski. The two fights in a row in the win column come after a two year layoff that succeeded his loss to Martin Kampmann. Whoever wins, it is critical for both men that they also come through this fight ready to fight again soon so they can build momentum going forward.
