The UFC is back in Brazil this Saturday night bringing us a Fight Night event headlined by the welterweight bout between Carlos Condit and Thiago Alves. The two men are former No. 1 contenders in the division, but losses and inactivity have put both men way back in the pack.
Condit, is a former interim titlist who has been off for more than a year healing a knee and was 1-3 in his last four fights prior to the injury. To say he enters the fight with a lot of open questions is an understatement. Alves is trying to build momentum, as he is 2-0 in the last three years and he has not looked sterling in those fights.
The main event is supported by a rematch at featherweight between Charles Oliveira and Nick Lentz. The two first met back in June of 2011 in a “Fight of the Night” performance that saw Oliveira landed a knee to Daze Lentz and then apply a rear naked choke for the finish. The fight was later ruled a no contest, as the knee was deemed illiegal, so this rematch has been roughly four years in the making.
The rest of the card features the usual Brazilian fighters serving as the local hosts as they face off against competition facing a road fight. The travel and atmosphere in Brazil at times have played a big factor in how fighters perform there, but recently several outsiders have broken through with wins. For this Fight Night event, several foreign fighters are favored over their Brazilian counterparts at the books.
