UFC Heavyweights: Mark Hunt vs Roy Nelson In The Works! 5/4/2014

Roy-Nelson

There is talk that the UFC is looking to put together a Heavyweight clash by end of year between Mark Hunt and Roy Nelson.  It is a battle of two veteran fighters known to be big punchers who can take a lot of punishment.  Nelson recently snapped a two fight losing streak when he found his big punch and KO’d Antonio Noguiera back in April, while Hunt is looking for a win aafter going 0-1-1 in his last two fights, both grueling affairs against Junior Dos Santos and Antonio Silva.  Look for Nelson to open up a favorite at the sport books when the line opens up.

Hunt has made several memorable UFC fights with his Tonka Truck style head, and he still counts on being able to take punishment in order to get through with his own shots.  Few can forget him slowly fading after the repeated onslaught Dos Santos put on him, until he finally went down.  Hunt needs to avoid getting hit by Nelson, who throws big punches with a lot of emphasis.

Nelson has come through several wars and has a reputation for having an iron chin.  Once upon a time, Andrei Arlovksi did level Nelson, and though Nelson is a much improved fighter than that 2008 performance where he tired big time, you have to give that Hunt probably has the power to take out Nelson if he lands flush.

But Nelson too can hurt Hunt standing, and Nelson is the much better fighter on the ground.  Nelson has a solid wrestling background and his stocky build makes him hard to take down, but on top he knows how to control and how to do damage with the ground and pound.  If the stand up is not going his way against Hunt, he has the option to try a takedown and to try to fight from top position.  Hunt does not have that in his bag of tricks, so he becomes more limited and one dimensional in this fight.

Take a good look at the under on this one, as it could be over fast and it almost certainly will not go the full distance.
