UFN 129 Odds – The UFC is in Chile this Saturday with the Fight Night 129 card headlined by Damian Maia’s welterweight duel with Kamaru Usman.
The fast rising Usman (12-1, 7-0 in the UFC) was originally scheduled to face Santiago Ponzinibbio, so the veteran Maia (25-8) is stepping into the bout on short notice. The late replacement puts a totally different spin on the fight. In Ponzinibbio, Usman was facing a similarly surging fighter who had put together a solid six fight winning streak. Now in Maia, he faces off against a battle-tested veteran who is 40 years old and on a two fight losing streak.
Ponzinibbio, from nearby Argentina, was being asked to main event. Maia is from Brazil, so the fight has the feel of being held on neutral grounds.
Maia is making his first appearance of 2018 after an active 2017 that saw him go 1-2. Last year started off well as Maia defeated the tough Jorge Masvidal to win his seventh fight in a row. That earned him a shot against UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, but Maia fell short in losing a five round unanimous decision. In October, he dropped another UD, this time to Colby Covington.
So the Maia that enters this fight on Saturday needs a win badly. A three fight losing streak at 40 years old is a pink slip waiting to happen with the UFC, so Maia has pressure to do the unexpected on Saturday. Though he has won from the underdog spot in his career, it is hard to see Maia pulling this win off at 40. Usman has the athleticism to stay up and avoid the ground game, where Maia is a wizard. On the feet we already know Maia is limited and that is not going to change.
The first Chilean fight card features three women’s bouts on the card, including the co-feature of Alexa Grasso vs Tatiana Suarez. Grasso (10-1) is looking to win her second fight in a row after her first setback and she is facing a fighter who is where she once was in Suarez, who is 5-0. Suarez comes from the UFC’s Reality TV series “The Ultimate Fighter” and she has a powerful wrestling background that give her the edge over Grasso.
The featured fights are set to air on Fox Sports 1 in the United States, with the undercard available on Fox Sports 2 and on the UFC’s Fight Pass. Check your local listings for start times. Below are the odds and the over/under numbers for the entire card.
