The PGA Tour will make the short trip to the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbour, Florida for the Valspar Championship this week. There will be $6.1 million in prize money up for grabs, but the top golfers in the world aren’t the only ones that will have a chance to cash in this week with millions of dollars on the line in DraftKings fantasy tournaments. That includes the $4M Fantasy Golf Millionaire tournament that features a $1 million prize to the winner. Here is a look at the optimal lineup for this week’s DraftKings PGA fantasy tournaments.
Jordan Spieth, $12,800
The world No. 1 is $1.3K more expensive than the next highest priced option on DraftKings, but he is definitely worth the price. Spieth won this event in a playoff a year ago and he will be eager to get back in the win column this week after stumbling a couple of times already in 2016. The fact that he was able to keep his cool and play at such a high level in last year’s playoff is testament to both his skill set and his confidence so it doesn’t make sense to bet against him. The fact that we can find a handful of strong value options elsewhere allows us to spend big on the best option by far on the board for this week.
K.J. Choi, $8,800
Spieth is the best bet to win this year’s Valspar Championship, but Choi is the overall best value on the board at $8.8K and he should be a lock in every single fantasy lineup for this week. The two-time champion is also the all-time money leader at Copperhead and he is absolutely on fire heading in to this week’s event. Choi has recorded two top-five finishes and a T-17 in his last four starts this season and could easily challenge Spieth at the top of the leaderboard as a very strong bet to at least place in the top-five.
Sung Kang, $7,700
There isn’t a value play on the board for this week that is nearly as good as Choi, but Kang is another option that also stands out because of his relatively low price tag. He enters this tournament in fine form after placing in the top-20 in each of his last three tournaments including two top-10 finishes and his stats make him seem like a good choice to excel at Copperhead. This will be his debut at the Valspar Championship, but at such a low price it makes sense to take a chance on him to stay hot this week.
Andrew Loupe, $6,900
There isn’t a lot of money left over for us to spend on the final three players in our lineup so it’s all about finding the best possible value by targeting the players with the highest potential upside heading in to this event. Loupe has made five straight cuts including a T-3 at the CareerBuilder Challenge and he had two weeks to prepare for this tournament following a T-14 at The Honda Classic.
Adam Hadwin, $6,900
Hadwin had a terrible showing at this tournament a year ago, but he has shown signs of life so far in 2016 and he came through for us a s a strong value option with top-20 finishes at the CareerBuilder Challenge, Waste Management Phoenix Open and Northern Trust Open already this season. Hadwin missed the cut at The Honda Classic a couple of weeks ago, but he has had time to regroup following that disappointment it’s worth taking a chance on him with the hope that he can bounce back this week.
Troy Merritt, $6,800
Merritt will be the riskiest play for us this week following a rollercoaster start to his 2016 season, but we feel the upside is there for a golfer with the potential to surprise. Merritt has missed the cut at six of his first nine events his year, but he hasn’t finished any lower than 21st at the other three including an 11th place finish in his last appearance at the Northern Trust Open. Factor in that he recorded a sixth place finish in last year’s Valspar Championship when he finished six-under and it’s clear that Merritt is worth the risk as the final golfer on our optimal roster for this week’s DraftKings tournaments.
