Saturday night in Las Vegas, Britain’s Amir Khan defeated American Devon Alexander over 12 rounds to win a unanimous decision. Khan looked good in fighting for just the second time in roughly 20 months, as he repeatedly used his speed to beat Alexander to the punch. In the end, Alexander may have won one of two rounds tops, as Khan put on a dominant performance.
The inevitable question that pops up now is who can we expect to fight the streaking Khan next? His side his expected to push heavily for the May date with Floyd Mayweather Jr. Mayweather is in an intersting position, as he is still undefeated and considered the number one guy, but his 2014 performances opened the door to some criticisms.
Mayweather is also being challenged for the date in early May by ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, and Mayweather does not like to come in second. The bottom line is that with Khan and his following, Khan can approach the match as a near equal partner. Should Mayweather look to do something big and different, like a stadium fight in fight-rabid England, Khan is the right person. In the end, look for Mayweather to look to maximize his income over the next to fights he has planned in 2015, and that probably means Khan first then the showdown everyone wants to see with Manny Pacquiao.
