Volvo China Open Preview

The European Tour shifts to Beijing, China for the Volvo China Open this week. This will be a tri-sanctioned tournament with the European Tour teaming up with the OneAsia Tour and the Chinese Golf Association. While this tournament has been largely nomadic, the Topwin Golf and Country Club in Beijing will be used again for the second year in a row after victories for the home heroes in each of the last two years.

Event Details

Event: Volvo China Open

Category: European

Date: April 27-30

Location: Topwin Golf and Country Club, Beijing, China

Haotong Li became the second hometown winner at this event a year ago after Wu Ashun won here in 2015. There will be big crowds supporting the home contingent again this year as the Chinese hope for a historic homeland hat trick and they should have a slight edge. However, there will be a strong contingent from the European Tour on hand including the last European golfer to win this event in Alexander Levy.

Past Five Winners

2016: Haotong Li -22

2015: Wu Ashun -9

2014: Alexander Levy -19

2013: Brett Rumford -19

2012: Branden Grace -21

What To Know About The Course

The fact that no statistics were issued for last year’s winner really hurts our ability to break down what it will take to win here this year. However, there is evidence that length off the tee will be important so we will closely consider Driving Distance as a key statistic. Three of the top-five ranked for Greens In Regulation a year ago finished inside the top-12 on the final leaderboard so that is another stat to keep an eye on. Meanwhile, this tournament was an absolute birdie-fest a year ago when Li produced a final score of 22-under. Putting will be key again this year with the potential for the winner to produce another outstanding score at this year’s Volvo China Open.

The Field

While Levy is the last European player to win this event it is actually Bernd Wiesberger that enters this week as the sports betting favorite to win outright. Wiesberger is listed at +1000 odds while Levy is listed at +2500 odds to repeat at this tournament. Meanwhile, Ross Fisher is also considered among the most likely to win here as he is listed at +1200 odds, right between Wiesberger and Levy. Joost Luiten, Jordan Smith and George Coetzee round out the top European contenders for this week’s event. Meanwhile, with a strong Asian contingent there are plenty of options to choose from at long odds.

A Good Matchup To Bet: Hao Tong Li over Joost Luiten

It’s pretty incredible that Li is listed at such long odds to win outright after dominating at this event a year ago. Li produced a winner score of 22-under par and yet he is listed at +4500 odds to win this event outright this year. Meanwhile, Luiten is actually getting more credit than he deserves heading in to this event based largely on his name. There is excellent value betting on a Chinese national to beat a European Tour player this week and Li makes the most sense as the defending champion at this tournament.

Top-Five Pick: Ross Fisher

Fisher’s numbers indicate he likely should be a lot more successful than he has been over the past couple of years. While he has just one win to his name over the last six years he has come close a few times. Fisher should be in the mix again this week. Even if Fisher doesn’t pull out that elusive victory he should be in the mix as a strong pick to finish in the top-five at the Volvo China Open this week.
