The WCC championship is decided this evening as Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s square off for the third time this season. On the line is the conference’s auto bed to the NCAA tournament and final bragging rights for a banner year for the second-tier in the conference.
The Gaels of Saint Mary’s have taken care of Gonzaga twice already this, both at home and on the road. In years passed, it wasn’t unusual to see these two teams split as both home courts are among the most underrated in the country. However, it was Randy Bennett and his stellar, though possibly unspectacular, guard play that has proven to be the difference between these two teams.
The Bulldogs will look to their front court and big man to take care of business. Senior forward and do everything star Kyle Wiltjer had a big time game in the semifinals against BYU, scoring 29 points while putting up a barrage of buckets from beyond the three point arc. The question is, can he do that again St. Mary’s? In the past match ups the season, Gonzaga’s guards simply haven’t been good enough. Redshirt freshman Josh Perkins will need to have a big-time game both scoring the ball and setting up teammates in an efficient manner, while playing stout defense, if the Bulldogs are to finally break through against the Gaels.
Both of these teams still do hold hope, however slim, for an at-large berth to the big dance. If they want to make their Selection Sunday little bit more relaxing, they would be well served to take care of business in the WCC championship Tuesday night.
