Let’s take a look at Wednesday’s top fantasy possibilities as we combine some value picks with some obvious power selections.
Left Wing – Wednesday’s top selection is Toronto Maple Leafs left winger James van Riemsdyk, who stands to have a potentially big night in a home game against the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday night. Van Riemsdyk has just one goal in his last five games but with the potential for much more.
Rick Nash of the Rangers has cooled off as of late with just one goal in his last five games, which means its only matter of time before the 38 goal scorer gets back on track. The Rangers are at the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night.
What choice do you have but to pay the price for Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals? The Great Eight is on his way to a Hart Trophy, among other hardware, and has kicked into overdrive with a NHL high 44 goals. Ovechkin has five goals in his last three games.
Center – Washington Capitals center Niklas Backstrom is tied for the NHL lead in points with teammate Alexander Ovechkin and yet goes unnoticed. Backstrom is an assist machine with 51.
Right Wing – Phil Kessel of the Toronto Maple Leafs has disgraced himself and the game with his horrible play. He last lit the lamp on February 26, which marked just his second goal in 13 games. Kessel’s poor play makes him the classic undervalued stock with plenty of upside as a player that is capable of a 35 goal season. Going up against the Sabres in a Wednesday night home game, the moody slacker stands a decent chance at scoring more than once and breaking out of his slump without having to break a sweat.
Defense – Washington Capitals defenseman John Carlson is another quality player that operates in obscurity with Ovechkin garnering all of the attention in DC. Carlson has 10 goals and 36 assists with a plus-12 on the season.
Defense – Newly acquired defenseman Keith Yandle is due to break out after failing to post a point in his first three games. Yandle brings plenty of offensive ability and should get extra power play time as he continues to blend into the lineup.
Goaltender – Washington netminder Braden Holtby is coming into his own and has emerged as one of the top goalies in the game. Holtby is hot with a .945 save percentage in his last five games and has posted seven shutouts on the season.
